- Family location sharing means each person agrees to share their phone's location with the others.
- For location to keep updating after the app is closed, you need permission set to Always and battery optimisation turned off.
- Whether you only want the current location, or arrival alerts and movement prediction too, decides which app suits you.
What family location sharing is
Family location sharing lets family members see each other's current position on a map, once each person has agreed to share from their own phone. The phone works out where it is from GPS, Wi-Fi and cell signals, sends that position periodically, and it appears on the map in the connected family member's app.
People often call it "location tracking", but a properly built service is not one person quietly watching another. Both sides agree before a connection is made, and each person can switch their own sharing off.
How real-time sharing works
1. Working out the position
The phone estimates its position from GPS, Wi-Fi and cell towers. Indoors, underground or between tall buildings the GPS signal weakens and accuracy drops, so turning on precise location and Wi-Fi in the device settings improves it.
2. Sending in the background
For sharing to be "real-time", location has to keep being sent after the app is closed. That is why permission should be set to Always, and on Android the battery setting should be Unrestricted.
3. Showing it, and telling you
The position appears on your family member's map. A good app does more than drop a pin: it tells you whether they are moving or staying put, and whether they have arrived somewhere you care about.
Features a family location sharing app needs
| Feature | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Consent on both sides | Prevents secret monitoring and keeps trust in the family. |
| Moving vs. staying status | "At the study centre for 40 minutes" tells you far more than a dot. |
| Arrival and departure alerts | You do not have to open the app to check. |
| Pause sharing | You should be able to stop sharing with one person when you want to. |
| Location view history | You can see who looked at your location, and when. |
| Encrypted location data | Even if data leaks, the coordinates cannot be read. |

DOKOPANG adds AI arrival prediction and safe-zone alerts on top of real-time sharing. Every feature is free.
Sharing location with family in DOKOPANG
DOKOPANG connects family members as "partners" who share live location. It does not stop at showing where someone is now: it learns everyday movement patterns and tells you where they are likely heading next.
- Moving or staying status, time spent, distance remaining and estimated arrival time
- AI prediction of the next destination and arrival time, with a confidence level
- Alerts when someone arrives at or leaves a safe zone such as school or a study centre, configurable by weekday
- Everyone you are connected to on a single map
- Coordinates stored with AES-256 encryption, plus a location view history
- Free from sign-up through to AI prediction, on Android and iOS
Setup, step by step, is in three ways to share location with family.
Worth agreeing on before you start
- Why you are sharing — to know everyone is safe, not to monitor each other
- Where you want alerts — home, school, a study centre, work
- When it is fine to pause — agree in advance so nobody feels awkward
- How you will get in touch — a message first when someone is running late, before any alert
Talking about sharing as a promise that puts everyone at ease, rather than a way of checking up, is what makes it last.
Frequently asked questions
Can I share someone's location without their consent?
You cannot, and you should not. Location is sensitive personal information. In DOKOPANG, a connection is only made once the person you invited accepts the request.
Does location sharing stop when the app is closed?
If location permission is set to "While Using the App", sharing stops the moment the app is closed. Set it to "Always" and exclude the app from battery optimisation so location keeps updating in the background. Force-quitting the app still stops it.
Can iPhone and Android family members share with each other?
DOKOPANG supports both Android and iOS, so family members can connect even when they use different devices.
Does location sharing use mobile data?
DOKOPANG itself is free, but sending and receiving location uses mobile data charged under your own plan. On Wi-Fi there is no mobile data usage.
