- Check first that it connects with consent on both sides, not by quietly watching someone.
- The heart of it is alerts you get without opening the app.
- Look at how long location history is kept, whether view history exists, and how data is encrypted.
1. Does it connect with consent on both sides?
Location is sensitive personal information. An app built around watching someone without their knowledge can create legal problems, and — more immediately — it destroys trust the moment it is discovered.
Check that a request has to be accepted before a connection exists, and that sign-up includes identity verification. In DOKOPANG, location is only shared after phone-number verification and after the person you invited accepts.
2. Can you tell how old the position on screen is?
The most common complaint about location apps is "it has been stuck at the same place for hours". Usually the phone's power-saving features have stopped background updates.
iPhones in particular do not send location at all while the device is stationary. A position can be displayed and still be hours old, and it will not refresh until the person starts moving again. Android devices can also stop sending because of manufacturer-specific power saving.
Every app faces the same constraint, so when a location has not updated for a long time, calling is more reliable than waiting for an alert. What you should look for is whether the app shows you the time the position was recorded.
3. Can you fine-tune place alerts?
Once you register the places you care about — school, a study centre, work — you learn about arrivals without opening the app. Check the following.
- Can you choose a radius that fits the place? (DOKOPANG: 50 m, 100 m, 200 m)
- Can arrival and departure alerts be switched on separately?
- Can alerts be limited to certain weekdays, such as study-centre days?
- Can you register enough places? (DOKOPANG: 20 safe zones and 20 caution zones)
4. Does it tell you when something is out of the ordinary?
What families really need is to know when something differs from the usual pattern. DOKOPANG learns everyday movement and sends risk prediction alerts for situations such as these.
- Travel late at night, or at an unusual hour
- A place visited for the first time, or a destination they do not normally go to
- Leaving home, a delayed return home, a predicted destination that changes suddenly
- Health risks such as extreme heat, extreme cold or poor air quality
Too many alerts and people switch them off. DOKOPANG sorts situations into urgent, caution and informational, and only sends push notifications for urgent and caution.
DOKOPANG predicts the next destination and unusual situations, and lets your family know first.
5. Can you see who viewed your location?
The person sharing needs peace of mind too. Under Settings > Location view history, DOKOPANG shows who looked at your location and when, filtered by period or by person. You can also pause sharing with one family member without disconnecting.
6. How is location history stored?
Location history becomes more sensitive the more of it accumulates. Check that storage and retention are stated openly.
- DOKOPANG stores coordinates and addresses encrypted with AES-256.
- Movement and stay history, place visit history and location view history are kept for 12 months, then deleted automatically.
- Closing your account deletes them regardless of the retention period.
7. Is the cost clear?
"Free" can still mean automatic billing when a trial ends, or that alerts and history are the paid part. Start by checking whether you are asked to register a payment method. DOKOPANG provides every feature free and has no screen anywhere for entering payment details. More on this in free family locator apps.

Frequently asked questions
Is a family locator app different from a family safety app?
The terms are not strictly defined. Apps centred on seeing a current position are usually called locator or tracking apps, while those that add place alerts and unusual-situation detection are called family safety apps. Whatever the name, what matters most is whether both sides consent to the connection.
Can I use it to check on an elderly parent?
Yes. With risk prediction alerts turned on, DOKOPANG tells you about leaving home, a delayed return, or travel at an unusual hour, and the morning briefing summarises their status once a day. Risk prediction alerts are off by default, so turn them on in that person's profile settings.
What if an AI prediction does not match reality?
Tap "All good" on the alert. That feedback makes predictions more accurate over time. Predictions are for reference only, so when you are genuinely worried, call and check.
